  • Why are the towels stiff?

    Hard water binds with detergent and leaves mineral residue in fabric. Towels that dry like cardboard are one of the more honest hardness tests in the house.

Salt-based or salt-free water softener?
Salt-free units, often called conditioners, change how minerals crystallize so less scale sticks, but the hardness reading doesn’t move. At Valley hardness levels, ion exchange with salt is the method that actually removes calcium and magnesium. Salt-free is a fair compromise where there’s no drain nearby or no room for a brine tank.
Will softened water taste salty?
No. The sodium added is proportional to the hardness removed, and at typical levels you won’t taste it. If you’d rather skip it, potassium chloride works in the same unit, or a reverse osmosis system at the kitchen sink takes it back out of your drinking water.
How much salt does a water softener use?

How long does a water softener last?
