Galvanized steel was never meant to last seventy years. It was simply the standard supply pipe when Youngtown was founded in 1954 as the nation’s first age-restricted retirement community, and most of the homes built there through the 1950s, ’60s, and ’70s went in with it. Many of those homes are still standing, and plenty are still running on some of that original pipe.

Galvanized ages in a predictable order. The zinc coating wears away, the steel rusts from the inside out, and very hard water lays scale on top of the rust. Flow narrows. Water comes out brown after sitting. The threaded joints, where the wall is thinnest, start to seep. By the time a house this age shows a visible leak, the rest of the line is rarely far behind.

Plenty of Youngtown owners have repaired one section at a time, which is reasonable right up until the repairs arrive every year. Past that point, a whole-home repipe is usually a better use of money than the next round of patches and the water damage that tends to come with them, and financing spreads the cost out.
