Plumbers in Litchfield Park

The town takes its name from Paul Litchfield, the Goodyear executive whose company came to the West Valley early in the last century to grow cotton for tires, and the Wigwam resort began as the company’s lodge. That history left behind something rare out here: an original village of homes from the 1940s through the ’60s, still lived in, many with some of their original supply pipe in service.

Original pipe in a house that age is usually galvanized steel, and it has had decades of very hard water running through it. The interior is crusted with rust and scale, flow has narrowed, and the threaded joints, where the pipe wall is thinnest, are where it finally lets go. Brown water after a vacation, pressure that fades toward the far end of the house, and a rust stain on a wall near a fixture are the usual tells. The village’s mature trees are part of its charm and a standing threat to old sewer laterals, since roots find joints and move in.

The newer homes around the village were plumbed in copper and behave like the rest of the modern West Valley. For the historic core, the question is when to replace, not whether.
