Plumbers in Peoria

From the old downtown along Grand Avenue to the subdivisions still going up toward Lake Pleasant, Peoria covers a lot of north-south ground. The southern end is mostly 1980s and ’90s homes plumbed in copper; north Peoria, still growing, is largely PEX. Serving all of it takes long runs of water main, and a great many homes here depend on a pressure-reducing valve, or PRV, where the line enters the house.

A PRV takes whatever the street delivers and steps it down to something household plumbing can live with. When one wears out, it lets street pressure creep through, and the house rarely leaks first. Instead the pipes bang when a valve shuts, toilets refill for no reason, the relief valve on the water heater drips, and the heater itself dies years ahead of schedule. Those are some of the quieter warning signs that something upstream has gone wrong.

A pressure gauge threaded onto an outdoor spigot settles the question in a minute. If it reads above 80 psi, the regulator needs attention before anything else does. Replacing it is modest pipe repair next to the water heater it would otherwise shorten, and it is worth checking again after any work on the main.
