Historic districts have rules about what you can change on the outside of a house. Nobody writes rules about the pipe, but the house enforces its own. The oldest homes in Central City, bungalows and revival-style houses in historic districts such as Roosevelt, went up in the decades before the Second World War, a few blocks from downtown towers built in the last twenty years. Behind their lath-and-plaster walls, the original supply is galvanized steel and the drains are cast iron.

Both are at or past the end of their working life. Galvanized narrows with rust until pressure drops and leaks appear at the threads. Cast-iron drains corrode along the bottom of the pipe, where the water runs, and eventually crack or scale nearly shut, and roots take advantage of every opening. The newer high-rises nearby have a different set of concerns: commercial-grade systems, booster pumps, and shared stacks that need scheduled attention.

The craft in the old houses is access. A careful repipe routes new PEX through attics, closets, and existing chases, opens as little plaster as possible, and chooses openings that can be patched cleanly. That takes more planning than tearing out drywall in a 1998 tract house, and it’s fair to ask any plumber how they intend to do it.
