Salt-based or salt-free?

At Phoenix hardness levels, salt-based ion exchange is the only approach that genuinely removes it. Salt-free is a reasonable compromise where a drain or a brine tank cannot be accommodated.
Will it make the water taste salty?
No. The exchange adds a small amount of sodium proportional to hardness — for typical Valley water, less than a slice of bread per litre. If sodium is a medical concern, potassium chloride works in the same equipment.
What does it cost to run?
