Close to 200,000 BTUs an hour: that is what a whole-house tankless heater can draw when every shower in a Encanto house runs at once. The tank it replaces probably burned about 40,000. Undersize it and nothing explodes. The burners just go lazy and yellow, and the new appliance never performs like the showroom model.

  • A rotten-egg smell, even a faint one

    Near the meter, the range or the water heater, it means something. Strong, or anywhere indoors: leave first, then call the gas utility or 911 from outside.

  • Hissing near a line or an appliance

    A small leak at a fitting can be audible in a quiet garage. Do not go looking for it with a lighter, a flashlight you switch on in the room, or your nose. Leave and call.

  • Dead plants or bubbles over a buried run

    Gas escaping underground displaces the air in the soil and kills what grows above it. After a monsoon rain or a sprinkler cycle, a leaking line can bubble up through a puddle. Watch the runs to pool heaters and outdoor kitchens.

  • Why is the gas bill up in June?

    Summer is when most Phoenix houses use the least gas: the furnace is off and the water heater starts with warm water. A bill that holds steady or climbs when it should drop deserves a pressure test.

  • Burners with lazy yellow flames

    A healthy flame is mostly blue. Tall yellow flames and soot point to poor combustion, sometimes from a starved supply line, sometimes from the appliance itself. Either way, keep a working carbon monoxide alarm near the bedrooms.

  • An old brass connector behind the range

    Uncoated brass flex connectors from decades past are known to crack at the flare fittings. If yours is dull gold with no plastic coating, replace it. It is a small job with a large payoff.

What should I do if I smell gas?
Leave the house and take everyone with you. Don’t use light switches, phones, the doorbell or the garage door opener on the way out, since any of them can spark. From outside, well away from the building, call the gas utility’s emergency line or 911. After the utility makes it safe, call us for the repair.
Can my existing line handle a tankless water heater?
Usually not without changes. Most houses were piped for a tank heater, a furnace and a range, and a whole-house tankless unit can demand about five times what the tank did. Sometimes only the last section needs upsizing; sometimes the meter has to be upgraded by the utility. We check before you buy the heater, not after.
Is CSST safe?
Properly installed and bonded, it is approved by code and common in newer Valley homes. The bonding matters because a nearby lightning strike can arc through an unbonded jacket, which is worth thinking about during monsoon season. We check the bonding on any CSST we work on.
Can you add a line for a gas range, dryer or fire pit?
That is most of what we do on gas. Switching from an electric range to gas is a common part of a kitchen remodel, and outdoor runs to grills, fire pits and patio heaters are the other big category. Before any trench is dug, buried utilities get marked through Arizona 811.
