  • Complete silence

    The thermal overload has tripped, the breaker is off, or the switch or wiring has failed. The red reset button on the bottom is the first thing to try.

  • Where is the water under the sink coming from?

    Location tells you nearly everything. From the top, the sink flange putty has let go. From the side, the dishwasher inlet or the discharge tube gasket. From the bottom of the housing, the unit is finished.

  • Dishwasher water backing into the sink

    Often a clog at the disposal’s dishwasher inlet or in the trap. On a brand-new disposal, it can be the knockout plug inside that inlet, which nobody removed during installation.

  • Grinding, rattling, or metal on metal

    Something hard is in the chamber, or the plate and bearings are wearing. Kill the power and look with a flashlight. Use tongs, never fingers.

  • A smell that comes back every few days

    Food packed under the rubber splash guard and around the grind ring. Ice cubes and a cut lemon help. If the smell is sharp and sewer-like rather than sour, the trap or the drain line is the likelier source.

Why is my garbage disposal humming but not working?
The plate is jammed while the motor has power. Switch it off, fit a ¼-inch hex wrench into the socket on the bottom and rock the plate free, then press reset. If it jams again right away, something is still in the chamber, and a flashlight and tongs will find it.
Can a garbage disposal be repaired, or does it need replacing?
Jams, resets, flange leaks, and loose connections are repairs. A leak from the body of the unit, a burned-out motor, or a cracked housing means replacement, because rebuilding the motor or internal seals isn’t practical on most home units.
What should never go in a garbage disposal?
Grease, fibrous peels and husks, coffee grounds in quantity, bones, fruit pits, pasta, and rice. Eggshells are argued about; the membrane can wrap and the grit settles in the trap. When in doubt, the trash can has never clogged.
Should I run hot or cold water with a disposal?
Cold. It keeps fat solid enough to be chopped and carried off, rather than melting and coating the pipe farther down, where it cools and sticks anyway. Let the water run a few seconds after the grinding stops to clear the trap.
