Here is the local fact that matters: Scottsdale water holds roughly 15 to 20 grains of dissolved mineral per gallon. Heaters feel it first, valves and cartridges second, the owner’s wallet a close third. A water softener changes the arithmetic; nothing else does.

When someone flushes a toilet mid-shower, the cold supply pressure dips for a few seconds. In an old two-handle shower, the mix swings hot and you jump. A pressure-balancing valve prevents that with a small piston, called a spool, that slides inside the cartridge as pressures shift, throttling the hot side to match the cold. Modern code requires this kind of anti-scald protection in showers for exactly that reason. It works well, right up until the spool can’t slide.

What a failing shower tells you

  • Lukewarm at full hot

    If the sink next door runs hot, the heater is fine. The cartridge is scaled or the limit stop is set too cool, and either one is handled at the valve.

  • Still dripping an hour after it’s off

    A minute of drips as the head drains is normal. A steady drip long after means the cartridge seals are worn, and the water is going straight down the drain and onto your bill.

  • The tub spout keeps running in shower mode

    The diverter gate inside the spout has worn or scaled, so part of the flow escapes below and the showerhead gets less. A new spout is a quick, inexpensive fix.

  • A spray that used to be stronger

    Check the showerhead screen and flow restrictor first. If a new head doesn’t help and other fixtures are fine, the cartridge is partly blocked. If every fixture is weak, look at the pressure regulator or the supply piping, where pipe repair may be the real conversation.

  • Why is the wall on the other side swelling?

    A wet wall behind a shower means the pan, the valve connections, or the shower arm fitting. Where the stain sits is a clue, and leak detection narrows it down without opening a wall on a hunch.

  • Dark grout that won’t dry

    Grout at the base of the walls or around the drain that stays dark overnight is sitting on wet mortar. The weep holes are likely clogged, or the liner has failed.

Why does my shower go from hot to cold?
Most often a pressure-balancing cartridge that’s scaled or worn, so it no longer compensates when another fixture draws water. Less often, a tankless heater that drops out at low flow. The cartridge is the cheaper suspect, so it gets checked first.
Can you replace a shower valve without removing tile?
Often. Cartridges come out from the front. Replacing the whole valve body usually needs access from behind, through a closet or bedroom wall, or an oversized trim plate that covers a slightly larger opening in the tile. You’ll know which applies before we start.
How do I know if my shower pan is leaking?
Stains on a ceiling below, a swollen baseboard outside the shower, or grout that stays dark overnight. On a slab, check the flooring in the next room. A flood test confirms it: plug the drain, fill the floor, and see whether the level drops.
How long does a shower cartridge last?
Water decides. Hard water shortens a cartridge’s working life noticeably, and a household that takes a lot of long, hot showers wears one out faster. When a cartridge starts sticking or dripping, replacement is routine; cleaning a badly scaled one rarely buys more than a few months.
