“The coffee tastes different at my sister’s house.” We hear some version of that in Anthem often, and the difference is usually a reverse osmosis system under her sink. Here is the local fact that matters: Anthem water holds roughly 15 to 20 grains of dissolved mineral per gallon. Heaters feel it first, valves and cartridges second, the owner’s wallet a close third. A water softener changes the arithmetic; nothing else does.

In the Valley, the membrane works hard. More dissolved mineral means more to reject and a faster buildup of scale on the membrane surface, which is why a system downstream of a water softener tends to go longer between membrane changes. On private wells, common out toward New River and Desert Hills, RO is also one of the more effective ways to reduce the naturally occurring arsenic found in some Arizona groundwater. Signs the system needs service

  • The RO faucet trickles

    Slow flow usually means clogged prefilters, a fouled membrane, or a tank that has lost its air charge. All three are fixable, typically in one visit.

  • That taste is back

    Chlorine or a musty note in RO water means the carbon stages are spent. Change them before the chlorine reaches the membrane.

  • A TDS reading close to the tap’s

    The membrane has stopped rejecting much of anything. Membranes wear faster on hard water, and a spent one looks perfectly normal from the outside.

  • Water running to the drain all night

    A steady trickle under the sink long after the tank should be full points to a failed shutoff or check valve. The system keeps producing, and wasting, around the clock.

  • Drips inside the cabinet

    Filter housings, tubing connections, and the drain saddle are the usual sources. Particleboard cabinet floors swell fast, so it’s worth a look whenever the trash goes out.

  • When were the filters last changed?

    If nobody in the house knows, it has been too long. Prefilters generally want changing about once a year, more often on hard or well water.

Does reverse osmosis remove fluoride?
It removes most of it. If fluoride matters to you, talk it over with your dentist before deciding. A remineralizing stage adds calcium and magnesium back into the water, not fluoride.
How much water does an RO system waste?
Conventional systems send several gallons to the drain for every gallon they deliver. Newer designs, and a softener upstream, improve that ratio considerably. Because RO only supplies drinking and cooking water, the daily total is modest next to a single load of laundry.
Do I need a water softener if I have reverse osmosis?
Not to drink the water. But RO treats one faucet, and the rest of the house still runs on hard water. A softener protects the water heater and fixtures; RO handles taste at the sink. Our Field Report on Valley hard water explains why the two so often end up paired.
Will RO water taste flat?
Some people think so, because it has lost the minerals that give water its character. A remineralization stage adds a little calcium and magnesium back. It’s a matter of taste, and easy to try both ways.
