Six ways a toilet asks for help

  • Phantom flushes

    The tank refills for a few seconds when nobody has touched it. Water is leaking past the flapper into the bowl and the fill valve is making up the difference. It’s the single most common toilet repair.

  • The handle has to be jiggled

    The chain is tangled, too long, or caught under the flapper, or the handle arm has corroded. Often you can fix it yourself: adjust the chain so it has about a half inch of slack.

  • It rocks when you sit down

    Movement breaks the wax seal even before anything leaks. If the seal is still intact, snugging the floor bolts may help. If the toilet has been moving for a while, it has to come up and go back down on a new ring.

  • Water at the base after a flush

    Either the floor seal has failed or the tank-to-bowl gasket is leaking and running down the outside. Dry everything, flush, and watch with a flashlight. Where the water appears first is where it’s coming from.

  • Weak flush, or two to clear the bowl

    Scale in the rim holes and siphon jet, or a partial clog in the trapway. If more than one toilet is sluggish, the trouble is farther down the line and drain cleaning is the right call.

  • A gurgle when the tub or washer drains

    Air forced back through the toilet trap points to a blockage in the main line, not the toilet. A camera inspection shows whether it’s roots, a sag, or a collapsed section.

Why does my toilet keep running?
Two usual causes. The flapper isn’t sealing (warped rubber, scale on the seat, or a chain caught underneath), or the fill valve isn’t shutting off and water is spilling into the overflow tube. Lift the lid and look. Water running into the tube means the fill valve; a level below the tube means the flapper.
How long does a toilet last?
The porcelain can go for decades. The parts inside can’t: in Valley water, flappers and fill valves are consumables, and a toilet that has had its insides replaced twice is still a perfectly good toilet. Cracks, chronic clogs, and wasteful old flush volumes are what retire one.
Is a toilet leaking at the base an emergency?
Rarely a midnight one. It is, however, a leak into your floor with every flush, so use another toilet if you have one and book a visit. If sewage is coming up or the water won’t stop, that’s urgent, and emergency service runs around the clock.
Why does my toilet clog so often?
Scale-narrowed rim holes and jets weaken any flush, and so-called flushable wipes don’t break down the way paper does. Some early low-flow models from the 1990s simply flushed poorly. If clogs keep returning with normal use, the problem may be in the line, not the bowl; a sewer line with roots or a sag behaves exactly like this.
