  • A water heater standing in its own puddle

    Cold inlet closed, gas or breaker off. A drip from a fitting on top is often a repair; a leak from the tank itself is not. A 40- or 50-gallon tank has a lot of water to give up.

  • Is water coming through a ceiling fixture?

    Close the main, and if you can reach the electrical panel without standing in water, switch off that circuit. Stay out of the room until it is dead. The source is usually a line in the attic or an upstairs bathroom.

  • The smell of gas

    Not a plumbing call first. Leave the house, leave the switches alone, and call the gas utility’s emergency line or 911 from outside. Once the utility has made it safe, gas line repair is ours.

Where is my main shutoff?
Most Valley houses have one where the supply comes out of the ground near the front of the house, either a quarter-turn ball valve or a round-handled gate valve. Some are in the garage. Find yours tonight and turn it once, both ways. A valve that hasn’t moved since the house was built can seize in hard water, and a seized valve discovered during a burst is a bad discovery.
Can it wait until morning?
Sometimes, and we will tell you when it can. A slow drip under a sink with the stop valve closed, a toilet that keeps running, a warm spot on the floor with the main off overnight: those can usually wait for daytime rates. Water you can’t isolate, sewage in the house, or no water at all in summer should not.
Is emergency service more expensive?
It is. Somebody is getting out of bed to do the work, and the rate reflects it. The figure is quoted before any work starts and holds once you say yes.
What should I do while I wait?
Main off. Heater off if the heater is involved. Lift rugs, electronics and cardboard boxes off the floor. Then photograph everything before you mop, including the ceiling and the bottom of the walls. Your insurance adjuster will ask, and pictures taken at midnight beat recollections offered a week later.
