  • Silt, gravel or a skin of dust in the pit

    Monsoon runoff carries a lot of dirt, and whatever settles in the pit ends up at the intake. Cleaning the pit is dull work. It also prevents most seized pumps.

  • Water pooling where the discharge ends

    A discharge that dumps beside the foundation, or back toward a sunken patio, sends the same water around again. It should end somewhere that drains away from the house.

  • The courtyard drain backs up before the pump gets a chance

    Sometimes the pump is fine and the drain feeding it is packed with leaves and silt. Clearing that drain line fixes what a new pump won’t.

Probably not. A slab-on-grade home with a yard that slopes away from the walls has no pit to empty. You need one when water collects below grade with no gravity drain: a basement, a sunken garage or courtyard, an equipment vault. Having someone look costs less than buying a pump you will never use.
How often should it be tested?
Once in June, before monsoon season, and again after any big storm. Pour water in until the float lifts. If the pump doesn’t start, or starts and won’t stop, that is a call to make before July.
Can the discharge go into a sewer cleanout?
In most Valley cities, no. Storm water isn’t meant to enter the sanitary sewer, and a sump tied into it adds load during exactly the storm when every other line is full. It should drain to the yard, a dry well, or the street where the city allows it.
What is the difference between a sump pump and an ejector pump?
A sump pump moves groundwater and runoff. An ejector pump lifts sewage from a bathroom or laundry that sits below the sewer line, through a sealed basin and a larger discharge. They look alike in a catalog and are not interchangeable. When an ejector keeps failing, the trouble may be the line it feeds, and a camera inspection will show it.
